books

This is a trial for the type of blog I am thinking of starting for our SSR program at school. Among enjoying many outdoor activities like frisbee golf, hiking, and biking. I always have to have a book to read. This years bests were for me were: Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follet, Cane River by Lalita Tidwell, Kite Runner and A Thousand Splended Suns by a guys name I would never dare try to spell. My go to authors are Jodi Picoult, Anita Shrieve, James Pattersons women's murder club series, and Janet Evonivich. If you have read any of the above books please leave your thoughts on it. If you have a must read please leave that too. I am always looking for something good but hate to just peruse as I get overwhelmed with all the choices. If there is a go to author I should add to my list let me know as well....they are the ones I choose from when I don't have a word of mouth book to read.

Hi Vicki,
Have you tried any of the Sarah Graves mysteries? She is a Maine transplant that sets all her mysteries in Eastport. They are a fun and entertaining, with some nice twists, light read.

No I haven't - I'll have to keep that in mind. There are a group of us teachers that read and share books ect.....we all love Picoult - who sets her books in NE and Anita Shrieve sets them in here too - the one I'm reading right now has a lot of references to a private school in Maine - called Kidd - is this a real one or just a fictious name given to one like it? do you know

I love Anita Shrieve too; she is definitely one of my favorite authors. I'm really tired right now, so I can't think of the names of authors I like (I find that I forget names more and more easily these days, especially when I am tired). I'll post again tomorrow with names of books/authors I like.

Does your school have a "girls point of view" book club? WA started one last year (it is sponsored by Tabitha and Steven King -- they supply the books). Anyway, interested girls all read the same book and get together to talk about it. Last year my daughter joined, and this year I decided to do it too. It has been great. We have read all sorts of books, some very hard-hitting like Bastard Out of Carolina (that one had got one of the best discussions going -- my daughter was a mess of tears when she finished reading it).

No our school doesn't - it sounds kind of neat - maybe something I can keep in my mind to develop as a natural offshoot to our SSR program.

Vicki -
I really like the idea of online response for SSR. It makes me think that schools could also use a Moodle Forum for book discussions. Bringing technology into the mix might boost student interest.

Hey Vicki,
You know most of the authors I enjoy reading as I hand the books off to you when I'm done. Jodi Picoult, Janet Evanovich, Nelson DeMille, James Patterson, Nicholas Sparks, Lisa Gardner, Susan Wiggs.
I did get another Susan Wiggs this week you can have...Also I read my first Sandra Brown and enjoyed it. I was supposed to swear off reading for the summer until I finish my grad classes but that isn't working for me :)

I've been reading three times as much this summer as I have for a year. See my capsule reactions at http://jeffs-bookreport.blogspot.com/
